Carol Stream residents who need a vehicle emissions test can skip the trip to a permanent station in October.

The Village of Carol Stream is partnering with the Illinois Air Team to bring a Mobile Testing Unit (MTU) to Ross Ferraro Town Center, 960 N. Gary Ave., from Tuesday, Oct. 20 through Saturday, Oct. 24. The specially equipped van will operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, with no appointment needed.

Testing is first-come, first-served.

The village said in a Sept. 28 announcement that the event continues an existing partnership with the Illinois Air Team, which operates the MTUs in coordination with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). The program deploys two testing vans to locations across the Chicago area to cut wait times for drivers.

The October round is the fourth and final MTU visit to Ross Ferraro Town Center in 2026. Earlier rounds ran in January, April and July. The next round is scheduled for Jan. 21–24, 2027.

Motorists should enter the Town Center parking lot from Fountain View Drive. The MTU handles all standard emissions test services, though damage claim inspections still require a visit to a permanent station.

Not every vehicle qualifies for mobile testing. Drivers must have received either an emissions test notice or a registration renewal notice showing a test is required. The Illinois Air Team's website offers a Vehicle Eligibility Check Tool where motorists can enter a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate number to confirm eligibility before heading over.
