Carol Stream residents can drop off old electronics, haul in boxes of sensitive documents for shredding, and smash their leftover Halloween pumpkins into a compost pile on Saturday, Nov. 7.

The village's annual Recycling, Shredding & Pumpkin Smash Event runs from 8 a.m. to noon at the Ross Ferraro Town Center, 960 N. Gary Ave. The event is open to all DuPage County residents, according to the village's announcement. It is free to attend, though fees apply for certain electronics items such as TVs and computer monitors.

DuPage County is providing partial funding for the event.

Stations and what they accept:

Electronics recycling: TVs, computer monitors and other electronics. Fees apply for some items.

Paper shredding: Up to six boxes or paper bags per person. Residents should remove binders, plastic covers and metal clips beforehand. Greeting cards are not accepted.

Textile drop-off: Dry, reusable clothing, shoes and household textiles.

Pumpkin Smash: Post-Halloween pumpkins for composting. All decorative items, including candles, stickers and plastic accessories, must be removed before drop-off.

The DuPage County-based environmental nonprofit SCARCE (School & Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education) also lists the event on its regional recycling calendar.
