Metra riders in Glen Ellyn, Lombard, and Carol Stream will lose evening train service Saturday, Sept. 19, and Sunday, Sept. 20, as BNSF Railway replaces 16,000 railroad ties on the line to Aurora.

The work covers the stretch between the West Eola Yard in Naperville and Hinsdale, according to a Metra press release. BNSF aims to finish before the Monday morning rush.

Saturday cancellations

Two evening trains will not run Saturday. Inbound Train 2304, the 8:05 p.m. departure from Aurora, is canceled. Outbound Train 2041, the 10:30 p.m. departure from Chicago, is also canceled.

Sunday reductions

Sunday service faces deeper cuts. After Train 2026, the 4:05 p.m. departure from Aurora, inbound trains will run only every two hours. Outbound service from Chicago drops to every two hours after Train 2029 departs at 7:33 p.m.

Delays beyond the weekend

Riders may hit delays starting Friday night, Sept. 18, as crews move into the work zone. Monday morning trains on Sept. 21 may also run at reduced speeds through the project area.

"Tie replacement is essential railroad maintenance," Metra CEO and Executive Director Jim Derwinski said in the Sept. 16 press release. "Though Metra always tries to minimize impact on our customers, this is a major and concentrated maintenance project and our flexibility is limited."

Derwinski said the project will help Metra deliver a smooth, safe and reliable ride despite the inconvenience to riders.

The next regular weekday schedule resumes Monday, Sept. 21, though Metra cautioned that morning trains may still face slight delays as crews wrap up.
