Students returning to Glenbard East High School on Wednesday, Aug. 12, found 110 new on-campus parking spaces waiting for them and new restrictions on the surrounding streets where they used to park.

The changes stem from an intergovernmental agreement between the Village of Lombard and Glenbard Township High School District 87, which the village announced Aug. 10 via its official social media accounts. The village said student parking is being transitioned from Wilson Avenue to the school's expanded lots to improve safety in the area.

As we reported Aug. 7, the restrictions had been approved but had not yet taken effect. Now that classes have begun, here's what's changed on the ground:

Wilson Avenue (south side, between Lincoln Avenue and Elizabeth Street): Parking is prohibited from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. on school days.

Graham Avenue and Taylor Road (between Main Street and Edson Avenue): The old two-hour parking limit has been cut to 30 minutes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on school days.

The village described the rollout as phased, according to its official newsflash. The 110 spaces added so far are part of the first phase. Another 30 parking spaces are planned for the Glenbard East campus in 2027.

Lombard resident, commenting on the village's Facebook announcement on Aug. 12, described why the change matters to drivers on Wilson Avenue:

"I avoid going down Wilson, especially east bound, on school days because several times that I have, some kid kicks his driver's door open without looking for traffic in the mirror and if I wasn't already driving in the oncoming traffic lane, my truck would have taken his door off. It is way too narrow a road for two-way traffic combined with high school parking. This change will make Wilson a far safer road between Finley and Main Street during school hours."

The restrictions are not yet permanent. Lombard residents who want to weigh in have until Thursday, Aug. 27, to submit public comments. A village committee hearing on whether to make the rules permanent is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 2.
