Drivers who park on Wilson Avenue near Glenbard East High School will face new restrictions when classes resume this month under an agreement between the Village of Lombard and Glenbard Township High School District 87.
The deal, announced in a village civic alert published Thursday, Aug. 6, moves student parking off neighborhood streets and onto 110 new on-campus spaces the district built this summer. Residents who want to weigh in on making the rules permanent have until Thursday, Aug. 27, to submit written comments.
What changes in Phase One
Starting this month on school days only:
- Wilson Avenue (south side, between Lincoln Avenue and Elizabeth Street): No parking, 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Graham Avenue and Taylor Road (between Main Street and Edson Avenue): The existing two-hour parking limit drops to 30 minutes, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The restrictions are temporary. Permanent amendments to Lombard's Traffic Code will go through a separate public review.
Phase Two in 2027
Once the district finishes 30 additional parking spaces scheduled for construction next year, the no-parking zone on Wilson Avenue's south side will extend from Elizabeth Street to roughly 265 feet east of Edson Avenue. That second phase is planned for August 2027.
How to weigh in
The Village's Public Safety and Transportation Committee, chaired by Trustee Bernie Dudek, will review the proposed permanent restrictions at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Lombard Village Hall, 255 E. Wilson Ave.
Residents can attend that hearing or submit written comments by Thursday, Aug. 27, for the committee's consideration. The village alert did not specify where to send comments; residents can contact Village Hall for details.
Background
The Lombard Village Board approved an intergovernmental agreement with District 87 at its July 17 meeting, according to The Lombardian. District 87's board confirmed the Glenbard East parking lot expansion as part of a broader summer capital project list at its July 29 meeting, alongside cafeteria additions, classroom renovations and new bleachers.
The village described the goal as transitioning student parking from Wilson Avenue to the expanded lots and improving safety in the area. No village or district officials were quoted on the record about the restrictions.
Glenbard East sits in Lombard's District 2. The school is one of four high schools in District 87, which serves about 7,810 students across Lombard, Glen Ellyn and Carol Stream.
The committee's Sept. 2 hearing will determine whether the restrictions become permanent parts of the village traffic code.
