Two southbound through lanes on Main Street in downtown Lombard will shut down Monday, Oct. 5. Crews will spend up to two weeks restoring a brick paver crosswalk damaged by utility work earlier in 2026.

The closures are scheduled through Friday, Oct. 16, weather permitting, according to a Village of Lombard civic alert. The work is limited to the northern leg of the Main Street and St. Charles Road intersection.

During construction, southbound traffic will be funneled into the existing left-turn lane, which will temporarily handle through traffic along with left and right turns. The village is urging drivers to find alternate routes, allow extra travel time and use caution around crews and equipment.

What pedestrians need to know

The crosswalk under repair will be closed to foot traffic for the duration of the project. The other three crosswalks at the intersection will stay open.

Driveway access to adjacent businesses will be maintained throughout construction, according to the village's project page.

Why the delay

The brick paver crosswalk was damaged during utility repairs in the area earlier in 2026. Because the crosswalk was originally installed with state grant funding, the village needed state approval before it could begin the restoration. That approval is now in place.

Once the paver work is finished, crews will also complete a full-depth asphalt patch outside the crosswalk limits. The village said the restored crosswalk will match the style of other downtown crossings.

How to stay updated

The village will post scope and timeline changes on its construction project page. Residents with questions can reach the Public Works Department at (630) 620-5740 or [email protected].
