A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Metra Union Pacific West line train near Crescent Boulevard and Finley Road in Lombard on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
Lombard Fire Department and Lombard Police Department responded to the scene. Metra officials confirmed the pedestrian died from their injuries, according to WGN TV. Metra Police Department took over the investigation, as is standard for incidents on Metra's rail system. Kane & DuPage County Scanner, which monitors emergency radio traffic, reported that paramedics confirmed the victim deceased at the scene.
A Metra spokesperson confirmed to CBS Chicago that trains were stopped just after 8 p.m. Both inbound and outbound UP-W service was halted near Lombard. Trains later resumed with delays.
The victim has not been identified. Neither Lombard Police nor Metra Police had issued a formal statement as of Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Second fatality in five weeks
The Aug. 11 death marks the second pedestrian fatality along the Lombard UP-W corridor in roughly five weeks. On Monday, July 6, a woman was fatally struck by outbound Metra Union Pacific train No. 51 near East Parkside Avenue and South Stewart Avenue, east of the Lombard Metra station, the Lombardian reported. As of July 13, Metra Police had not responded to a request for information on that incident, and the DuPage County Coroner's Office had not publicly released the victim's identity.
Statewide context
Illinois ranked fourth nationally for pedestrian rail trespass casualties in 2025, with 47 deaths and 29 injuries, according to preliminary Federal Railroad Administration data compiled by Operation Lifesaver. Separately, FRA data showed 119 collisions at public railroad crossings in Illinois that year, resulting in 34 fatalities.
"Illinois is home to more than 10,000 public highway-rail crossings," ICC Commissioner Michael Carrigan said in May when announcing the state's five-year Crossing Safety Improvement Program. That program authorizes $376 million for grade crossing upgrades at approximately 387 locations. DuPage County projects include a pedestrian grade separation in Glen Ellyn.
