Scammers are sending fraudulent emails and fake invoices that impersonate the Village of Lombard's Planning Services Division, the village warned Tuesday, Aug. 18.

The emails mimic official village communications and may reference planning, zoning or development information to appear legitimate, according to a village advisory posted on Lombard's website. Scammers may also use publicly available information about properties, projects, applications or village staff to make the messages more convincing.

The village said it will never send an email requesting urgent payment by wire transfer or ACH (Automated Clearing House) transfer.

Do not respond or send payment. Anyone who receives an unexpected payment request claiming to be from the Village of Lombard should call the village directly at (630) 620-5700 to verify.

The village also cautioned residents and businesses not to click suspicious links or attachments, and not to use phone numbers, email addresses or links provided in a suspicious message to check whether it is real. Official Village of Lombard email addresses end in @villageoflombard.org; any other domain should raise a red flag.

This is at least the second time in 2026 that Lombard has issued a scam warning involving someone impersonating the village. On Jan. 26, the village alerted residents that callers were claiming to collect money on behalf of the village by phone.

The DuPage County Sheriff's Office issued its own warning about law enforcement impersonation scams on July 15, pointing to a broader pattern of government-impersonation fraud across the county.
