A Louisville man who opened fire in the Yorktown Mall parking lot nearly four years ago will spend at least 15 years in prison after a DuPage County judge handed down an 18-year sentence Tuesday.

Ronald Grundy, 26, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony, and was sentenced by Judge Margaret O'Connell in a single proceeding in DuPage County Circuit Court on Aug. 11, according to Shaw Local, citing a DuPage County State's Attorney's Office news release. The charge carries a sentencing range of six to 30 years with no possibility of probation.

Under Illinois' Truth in Sentencing law, Grundy must serve 85% of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole, meaning he will remain behind bars for at least 15 years and three months.

The shooting

The incident unfolded around 3:05 p.m. on Nov. 11, 2022, in the Yorktown Mall parking lot near JCPenney in Lombard. Three victims — two men and one woman — were inside the mall when they were confronted by Grundy and co-defendant Jakobi Kinsey, 27, of Chicago. Grundy was wearing a ski mask. One of the defendants asked the victims "You good?" according to the State's Attorney's Office.

After the victims left the mall and returned to their car, the defendants drove their vehicle toward the victims' car. Grundy leaned out of the passenger-side window and fired multiple shots, striking the woman in the arm. Police recovered five 9mm spent casings at the scene.

She has since recovered. The woman was treated at a local hospital and underwent surgery to remove the bullet, according to authorities.

Arrests

Kinsey was arrested at a Chicago address on Nov. 12, 2022. Grundy was arrested at a Cook County address on Nov. 14, 2022. The next day, a judge granted the state's petition to deny Grundy bail, and he has been held at the DuPage County Jail since that date.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release: "The complete disregard for human life and the rule of law Mr. Grundy exhibited that day is almost unimaginable." Berlin noted the shooting happened during a three-day Veterans Day holiday weekend at the start of the busy shopping season.

Co-defendant's case pending

Kinsey faces one count of aggravated battery with a firearm and three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm. His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 1, before Judge O'Connell in DuPage County Circuit Court.
