Summer blood bank shortages are prompting a community blood drive in Lombard on Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the York Township building, 1502 S. Meyers Rd.
State Rep. Margaret DeLaRosa's office is co-hosting the drive with the Village of Lombard. DeLaRosa, who represents the 42nd District covering Lombard, Glen Ellyn, Downers Grove, Lisle and Wheaton, promoted the event in a July 30 Instagram post, urging residents to "help fill critical needs at local hospitals by donating blood."
DeLaRosa noted that summer months often bring blood bank shortages because of increased need and fewer donations. The drive aims to address that gap locally.
A single blood donation can save up to three lives, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Nationally, only 3% of age-eligible Americans donate each year, even though someone in the U.S. needs blood about every two seconds.
Donors should bring a photo ID. The process takes about an hour.
