Glendale Heights will mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks with a silent parade of first-responder vehicles and a remembrance ceremony at Village Hall.

The event begins at 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 11 with a silent parade starting at Reskin Elementary School, 1555 Ardmore Ave. Emergency vehicles will travel west along Fullerton Avenue to Village Hall, 300 Civic Center Plaza, where a brief ceremony will follow, according to the village's event listing.

At Village Hall, 2,977 American flags will be on display. Each one represents a life lost in the 2001 attacks, according to the Glendale Heights Recreation Department. Additional flags will line the parade route along Fullerton Avenue.

The village asks residents to fly flags at their homes for the occasion.

VFW Post 2377 conducted a Fallen Warrior ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park on Memorial Day. The village also launched its Raising Flags to New Heights program in January that installs American flags in residents' front yards on five patriotic holidays, including Patriot Day.

The $50 annual program is a partnership between the Glendale Heights Police Department and the Kiwanis Club of Glendale Heights. Student volunteers from Glenbard West and East high schools and Glenside Middle School help install and remove the flags.

"Glendale Heights has always been a very proud and progressive community," Tanya Macko, Glendale Heights police program supervisor and chair of the Raising Flags to New Heights committee, said in a January village announcement of the program.
