Glenbard South's football season ended Friday, Oct. 30, with a 48-13 loss at top-seeded Antioch in the Class 5A first-round playoffs.
The Raiders grabbed a 7-6 lead early in the second quarter. It didn't last. Antioch quarterback Ethan Patel threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more scores as the unbeaten Sequoits (10-0) pulled away, first reported by the Daily Herald's John Bumbales.
Glenbard South finished 6-5.
The game opened fast. Patel connected with Logan Lennon on a 67-yard touchdown pass just 55 seconds into the first quarter. Glenbard South answered when Tommy Bauman hit Jordyn Warren with a four-yard touchdown pass to put the Raiders ahead 7-6.
That lead was short-lived. A fumble on a kickoff early in the second quarter gave Antioch the ball back, and the Sequoits converted it into a touchdown. Scoring runs by Lennon and Patel pushed the lead to 20-7. Miles Marabella then hauled in a 51-yard touchdown pass from Patel to make it 27-7.
Glenbard South showed fight. Joe Longo caught a 47-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 27-13. But Chance Verden's 37-yard touchdown catch just before halftime sent the Raiders into the break trailing 34-13.
"We had some self-inflicted wounds that put us behind the sticks, and we just couldn't stop their jet sweep," Glenbard South coach Ryan Crissey said. He praised Antioch's discipline but said his players never quit: "… we fought as much and as long as we could … our kids really fought until the end."
Elijah Donahue carried the ball 22 times for 100 yards in a grinding effort for the Raiders. Antioch's Gavin Stone added a 66-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and Kelen Wilson rushed for 129 yards on nine carries. Patel's two-yard scoring run with 8:04 left in the fourth quarter closed out the 48-13 final.
Antioch advances to host No. 9 seed Sycamore in the second round, according to Shaw Local's playoff bracket.
