The League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn is inviting residents to a free documentary screening, panel discussion and on-site voter registration Saturday, Aug. 8, at the College of DuPage.

The event, called "Unite & Rise for Voting Rights," begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Health and Science Center, Room 1234, at 425 Fawell Blvd. The chapter says it honors the 61st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Attendees will watch John Lewis: Good Trouble, a 96-minute 2020 documentary directed by Dawn Porter that traces the late Georgia congressman's activism from the civil rights movement through his decades in office. A panel discussion follows the screening, though panelists have not yet been announced.

The LWVGE's Voter Services team will be available to register new voters and answer questions about the November election. The group is also promoting Vote411.org, a nonpartisan resource that helps voters research candidates and make a plan to vote. DuPage County's general election is scheduled for Nov. 3, with early voting tentatively set to begin Sept. 24.

The Glen Ellyn screening is one of more than 350 events planned across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., as part of the national League of Women Voters' Day of Action. The national organization described it as the largest coordinated voting rights mobilization ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

"This moment is about meeting people where they are — in their neighborhoods, at community events, and through trusted local leaders and partners," Jeanette Senecal, the national League's chief of civic learning and impact, said in a press release.

The local chapter has its own reason to celebrate. LWVGE member Dr. Sania Irwin was elected president of the national League of Women Voters at the organization's convention in July, according to the chapter's website.

Admission is free. The League encourages attendees to bring family, friends and neighbors. Event organizer Deb Giampoli posted the listing to the LWVGE website.
