Glen Ellyn elementary school administrators earned an average of $156,663 during the 2024-25 school year, about two-thirds more than the district's average teacher salary of $93,974.

The 66.7% pay gap in Community Consolidated School District 89 comes from Illinois State Board of Education data first reported by the DuPage Policy Journal. District 89 serves roughly 2,239 students at Arbor View, Briar Glen, Park View and Westfield elementary schools and Glen Crest Middle School in Glen Ellyn.

How District 89 compares locally

The gap is wider than in neighboring Lombard School District 44, where administrators averaged $136,688 and teachers $97,608, a 40% difference. But District 89's gap is narrower than Glen Ellyn School District 41, which covers the village's other set of elementary and middle schools. District 41 posted a 69.6% spread, with administrators averaging $151,848 and teachers $89,558.

District 89 teachers earned more on average than their District 41 counterparts by about $4,400.

At the top of the statewide scale, New Trier Township High School District 203 paid administrators an average of $200,839 and teachers $141,632, according to ISBE data compiled by the DuPage Policy Journal.

District spending held close to budget

At a June 15 board meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Maureen Jones reported that salary and benefits spending rose $389,000, or 1.57%, from the prior year. Superintendent Doug Eccarius's administration expected to finish the year about $53,000 under budget, Jones said.

Statewide, teacher pay is gaining ground

Across Illinois, teacher salaries grew faster than administrator pay over the five years ending in 2024-25. Teacher salaries rose 15.3% while administrator salaries increased 11.1%, according to ISBE.

That gap is closing. The state reported 2,943 unfilled teaching positions as of Oct. 1, 2025, down 24% from 3,864 a year earlier. The statewide teacher retention rate stood at 89.5%.
