Glen Ellyn landed 19th on WalletHub's list of the best small cities in America, the personal finance site reported Sept. 29.
The ranking compared 1,318 cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 across 45 indicators spanning affordability, economic health, education and health, quality of life and safety.
Glen Ellyn scored strongest in affordability (51st nationally) and safety (60th), according to the Belleville News-Democrat, which first reported the local results. The village placed 92nd for education and health, 199th for economic health and 606th for quality of life.
Village President Jim Burke, in an emailed statement to the News-Democrat, pointed to the village's character and programming.
"Glen Ellyn is a community that values its history, from homes on tree-lined streets that tell Glen Ellyn's story to a Downtown that brings people together year-round through special events and everyday moments," Burke said. "At the same time, we're always working to make things better. There's always something happening in Glen Ellyn."
Lexington, Mass., topped the national list. Brookfield, Wis., and Carmel, Ind., rounded out the top three.
WalletHub drew its data from federal sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the FBI, with figures collected as of Sept. 1.
Glen Ellyn residents have separately rated the village highly. In the most recent National Community Survey, conducted in fall 2023, 95% of respondents rated Glen Ellyn excellent or good as a place to live. Safety scored nearly as high: 94% gave excellent or good marks. Nine in 10 residents said they would recommend Glen Ellyn to others.
That survey collected 763 responses from a random sample of 3,000 households between Sept. 12 and Oct. 24, 2023.
WalletHub publishes the ranking annually. No village board action is tied to the results.
